Your post-workout meal should consist of a protein and carb source. Your fats should remain low. Protein is important post-workout because is will help rebuild the structural aspects of the muscle that were damaged during the workout. Carbohydrates will promote a substantial insulin release. Insulin is the hormone responsible for shuttling carbohydrates and amino acids into the muscle. In doing this, carbohydrate resynthesis is accelerated and protein balance becomes positive, leading to rapid repair of the muscle tissue. A good example of a meal is a protein shake with fruit and oats. This is quick, easy, and effective post-workout meal.
