Manual Therapy differs from relaxation massage because it involves a set of outcome-based treatments that are applied to target specific problem areas that a patient presents. Most of the client’s receiving manual therapy have received a diagnosis from a healthcare team and have a specific problem that needs to be addressed. These treatments are administered to the patient after a thorough assessment and evaluation by the massage therapist has been completed. Various styles of massage are utilized by the therapist in order to bring about a specific outcome.
Some of the most common treatments that Stephanie utilizes in her practice include the following:
A tool is used to create location suction to the skin to mobilize blood flow to promote healing in the affected area. Skin is gently drawn upwards by creating a vacuum by a small cup over the target area of skin. The cup can be left in place for five to ten minutes, or it can be moved over the area to mobilize tissues. This treatment is commonly used to help treat pain, relieve tension, and help eliminate deep scar tissues.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
IASTM utilizes a variety of hard-edged metal instruments enhance the healing response by adding a stimulus into the tissue, usually by cross-friction massage. These tools are used to release scar tissue, adhesions, and fascial restrictions by providing enhanced manipulation of soft tissue. When more blood flow is allowed to enter the area after treatment, the healing process is hastened.
Kinesiology taping uses a specific cotton-based tape for a variety of musculoskeletal, sports, and inflammatory injuries. Kinesio Tape is used by therapists to change muscle tone, improve lymphatic circulation, correct movement patters, and improve posture. Kinesiology taping also helps reduce swelling and edema by lifting the skin away from swollen tissues below. Tape also provides feedback to “retrain” muscles through proprioception in order to allow muscles to function more effectively.
